Louisiana baseball looks to add Jeff Cook

LOUISIANA La. — UL’s baseball team may officially pick up an area standout as early as today.
Former Notre Dame football and baseball standout Jeff Cook, who spent his natural freshman year as a redshirt football player at LSU, will be transferring to Louisiana to join the Ragin’ Cajun baseball team.
Cook did not report to the Tigers’ camp Tuesday, and had previously had a meeting with LSU head coach Nick Saban to express his desire to leave the Tiger football team and turn his attentions to baseball.
Cajun head baseball coach Tony Robichaux said that Cook had come to him within the last two weeks expressing a desire to transfer.

“Obviously, we knew him very well,” Robichaux said. “We recruited him out of high school, but he said he wanted to play football. He said that it was a dream of his to walk out of the tunnel in Tiger Stadium on Saturday night, so we didn’t contact him again.”
Robichaux said the process of obtaining a release consists of the Cajun athletic department sending a letter to LSU informing them of the athlete’s desire to transfer, and receiving a signed letter from Saban releasing him from his scholarship and granting permission to sign elsewhere.
That paperwork is scheduled to leave Louisiana's athletic complex this morning.
“He said he wanted to play baseball again,” Robichaux said. “We talked to him about the option of going to junior college for a year, but he said he wanted to come into the program now and start learning the system. We’ll let him come in as a freshman and see what happens.”
Since the 19-year-old Cook did not see game action for the Tigers in football, he still has four years of eligibility remaining.
Cook, the son of Notre Dame athletic director and head football coach Lewis Cook, played shortstop for most of his prep career and was a first-team Class 3A All-State selection in both his junior and senior seasons. He hit .395 with four homers and 30 RBI as a senior.
Cook missed most of his senior football season at Notre Dame with a broken leg, playing in only five games and completing 44 of 72 passes for 700 yards and six scores. One year earlier, he had led the Pios to the Class 3A state championship with a 15-0 mark and passed for over 1,900 yards and 20 scores.
“He’s a good enough athlete to where he can play somewhere,” Robichaux said. “We’ll start him out working at shortstop because that’s the toughest place to play, and see where his skills take him. He hasn’t played for a year, but he has time on his side and we’ll give him a chance to get his baseball skills back in the fall.”
