Why get into the top 16 just to host a regional if you end up getting sent to the #1 or #2 overall national seed for a super? Get in to a regional with a national seed between 5 and 12, win that thing, and then watch what happens.

Because there's no guarantee that we get sent to a 5-12 and the easiest path to a super is to host. Relying on the committee for a favorable draw leaves most people disappointed at the end of the selection show.
Even still, your goal is to win every game you play. In fact, the Cajuns have an opportunity to do that with their schedule. I doubt that if they creep back towards #16 the team would slack off and lose one to avoid getting a host spot matched up with a top 4 team.
The goal is not just to get to the WCWS, but put yourself in a position to win it. That means you'll likely have to beat a top 8 team (probably a few of them) at some point.
