Re: Josten Crow leaves UL for Tech
At this point, this is Dr. Maggard’s acceptance of mediocre for the men’s basketball program. He makes the excuse that their is minimal talent in the SBC. I hate to tell Bob Marlin, but if football and softball can find talent and coach them to win so can he. It’s time to transition to a winning coach with an energetic personality. Bob Marlin is too narcissistic and will not lead us to even be competitive in the SBC. Dr. Maggard’s loyalty needs to be the RCAF, student-athletes and fans. I trust him to make an excellent coaching hire as he has done in the past.

Let's just cut to the chase. There is no real standard with the basketball program. When a coach has to throw your nationally ranked football team under the bus as a way to cover up a sorry loss to the last place team in the conference ("The West division is pretty good. This isn't football where teams aren't very good."), that's when you know the writing is on the wall that the expectations are almost nonexistent. To this day, I am still baffled at that postgame comment.
In spite of the struggles of baseball right now, Matt Deggs straight up apologized recently to the fans and said that this is not the standard of Ragin' Cajuns Baseball. That's the difference right there of why fans will still give baseball a chance to improve while not even knowing when the basketball games are anymore. And it has nothing to do with "basketball being dead in the south." It has everything to do with standards.

Everyone I am familiar with who knows Coach Marlin well believes he is a good person at heart. Many of those same people however agree that the program has stagnated and significant improvement is needed this coming season. They also agree some of the comments he makes out of frustration do not help his cause. Going forward, most here assume that it is a given improvement will not occur. I don't think that it is impossible however.

Josten is moving on simply to get a different experience. All coaches who aspire to be head coaches need to be at a variety of places and work under different people. Different philosophies as well. That diversity of experience helps their qualifications and resume when the big opportunity arises. Tech sought him out. He was not looking to leave.

That is the knock on Bab, the man got no want in him.

So Josten Crow goes to Tech to replace Talvin Hester who is going to Texas Tech to coach under first year coach Mark Adams
Mark Adams was the only assistant coach at Texas Tech to not join his former boss Chris Beard who was hired by Texas.
Chris Beard replaces Shaka Smart who bolted for Marquette and may have seen the writing on the wall at Texas after losing in the first round of the 2021 NCAA tournament.
Marquette hired Shaka Smart to replace Steve Wojciechowski, who was fired at the end of the 2021 season.
Wojciechowski went to two NCAA tournaments in his seven seasons with the Golden Eagles, losing in the first round each time. A third appearance was nixed due to 2020 Covid.
Wojciechowski had a losing record in 2021 and was fired.
As far as I can tell, those the sequential reverse order of events that led to Josten Crow getting hired by Tech.

Well Mike, like UL Victory said, its about expectations and standards. What and who decides what "Improvement" is? For some reason, Maggard likes this guy and has rewarded him with being the highest paid coach in the league even due to a lack of regular season titles and post season.....well...anything really. Unless he has laid out some tangible goals and expectations for Marlin to meet, we're going to be in this boat for a while. He'll do just enough to tease the administration into extending him for a little longer and then do his thing.

Yeah, I wouldn't see the move from Texas to Marquette being a move upward or even lateral so its interesting why Smart left. He looked like he was building a decent program there.
