YOu guys scare me a little bit. I don't like teams coming off big juco classes. How many of them are starters now? Who are the elite guys my gamecocks need to shut down to win? finally, who's coming to Columbia???
The JCs jumped in and helped out our defense tremendously, as our Defensive Line is now the strength of our team. we also have a former butkis award list canidate back after he injured himself last year in Ross Brupbacher, who puts alot of pressure on defense. On offense, watch out for Fred Stamps, hes on a couple of watch Lists this year, and should be very good this year. I sure would like to see yer gamecocks here in lafayette though, thatd be fun!

Yea, like he said, he was married before he came here, and yea he does have a daughter that got fired up at practice. A couple of the children of the players on the team were around her, and it was funny, I heard like 4 "yay daddy!"s from them, only for them to get preoccupied with something else in the next 3 seconds...KIDS RAWK! one of the kids had his UL jersey on, Hope he keeps that up and one day plays for UL.

<Blockquote><p align=justify>LOUISIANA La. — UL’s football staff didn’t see much on film to change their opinions about Saturday’s second scrimmage of fall drills.
“It’s never as good as you think or as bad as you think,” head coach Rickey Bustle said Sunday after the Ragin’ Cajuns went through a two-hour practice session. “They had a lot of effort and enthusiasm and they fought through the heat to the very end. But we’ve got to get better on our assignments.”
The squad spent over an hour Sunday looking at film of Saturday’s 70-play scrimmage before hitting the field for their 18th practice session, and improving technique was high on the list of things to do.
More specifically, it was getting improvement from the newer squad members.
“The newcomers and juco guys still have a long way to go in technique,” said defensive coordinator Brent Pry. “The three new defensive linemen we have, the two newcomer linebackers, they’ve got to be more gap accountable.

“They want to be playmakers and free-lance, and we can’t do that. They’ve got to learn to play within their position. The plays will come if they play their position.”
That defensive unit held the rushing attack to 63 yards on 43 carries on Saturday, working against a patchwork offensive line that has not been fully healthy since the start of August drills.
“We’ve got to get those five guys out there as a unit,” said offensive coordinator Rob Christophel. “That’s so important to us this week. Ronnie (Harvey) is like a second quarterback for us in making all the calls. Once he and the rest of those guys settle in, we’ll be all right.”
Harvey, the returning starter at center, missed Saturday’s drills with heat problems stemming from Friday’s workouts. He is scheduled to return to practice Tuesday when the squad gets back from a day off today, which in turn allows returning guard starter Greg Hodges to return to his normal position after having to fill in at center.
“We’ve had several new guys in there,” Bustle said of the offensive line, “and they need to work on assignments. But they got plenty of work Saturday, and today they got to see it on film and see where they need to get better.”
The squad will return to workouts Tuesday and will hold a third scrimmage Wednesday before turning full attention to South Carolina, the Aug. 30 season-opening foe.
“We’ll meet at normal times this week,” Bustle said referring to the start of fall semester classes today. “Wednesday will be game-type with the coaches off the field, signaling in plays. Thursday and Friday, we’ll start getting ready for South Carolina.”
CAJUN CLIPPINGS: Overcast skies helped cool temperatures to the low 80s for Sunday’s 13-period practice ... Jerry Babb threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Fred Stamps during the only offense-vs.-defense period of practice, a series of plays against a 60-second clock simulating one-minute drills ... Cornerback Ricky Thomas intercepted an Eric Rekieta pass during that drill ... Christophel said that the first-team offense will get the bulk of the work in Wednesday’s 3:30 p.m. session at Cajun Field.

<Blockquote><p align=justify>LOUISIANA La. -- The University of Louisiana completed their 18th practice session in 14 days on Sunday.
The practice featured 13 periods, including four special teams periods. The Cajuns worked on kickoff and kickoff return, punt and punt block/return as well as onside kicks.
The only offense versus defense period was a ten-minute session on running the two-minute drill.
"We did a two-minute drill to get the mechanics of it down," Cajuns offensive coordinator Rob Christophel said. "The team worked on corrections of mistakes from the scrimmage to sharpen up a little bit."
With school set to begin today, the Cajuns will enjoy their first day of class without practice to worry about. ULL will resume practice at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday and then scrimmage again Wednesday at Cajun Field.
"When we get back to practice we will work on special situations," added Christophel. "The offense is pointing to game planning against South Carolina."

<p align=justify>Get well soon Michael.
A week ago today his life was on the line, in fact he almost died last Monday. he is not completely out of the woods yet.
When I saw or didn't see MZ at practice for a few days I corresponded with his father over the weekend as to his well being. I was only slightly concerned because at the start of fall practice I talked to Michael about the upcoming season and inquired if he was going to be playing the rover position like he practiced last year. He informed me he was now going to be at corner. In the few minutes we talked it came up that he did have a rash and was sitting out a few practices, but it seemed to be healing. In actuality he had an infection that was quickly turning into gangrene.
He has had 3 surgeries and has one more scheduled for today (Monday). According to Mick Zaterain (Michael’s father) <i>"Everyone has been incredible. Coach Bustle and the staff were on the way to hospital in the middle of the night when they learned about my son. All the coaches have called more than once a day. All the folks at UL have been 5 star.” </i>
He went on to say <i>"Michael is going to be all right over time and will be able to play next season. I'm not sure there are many D-1 schools that have a devoted coaching staff that would care that much about a redshirt. God Bless the Ragin' Cajuns.” </i>
I asked Mick if this was a private matter and he said no. His exact quote was;
<i>"Oh, No. I want everyone to know he's doing well. But, most importantly, I want to thank the entire Ragin' Cajun Family for all their support.
From a father, it means so much.
Thanks, and see you all in Lafayette soon.
We're Dome Bound!</i>

Hey 1st, why not invite a few of them over to the ranch for a taste of some down-home tailgating? They seem like a pretty decent group of fans!Quote:

Once on Bluff Rd follow it to the fairgrounds, just past the stadium. Turn into the fairgrounds and they will direct you to where alot of visiting teams get together.
There are many places to park around Williams Brice but the later you arrive, the further away you will have to park. Our place seats 82,000 and it will be filled, so get there early because the un-reserved parking fills up fast (half of the fairgrounds are reserved for Gamecock Club members)
Alot of tailgaiting takes place in the fairgrounds, walk around, we are friendly folk who like to have a good time. Walk up to the RV's, one always has a DJ spinning great tunes.
Enjoy
well i'm glad you're ready for some football. i was beginning to wonder. visited some of your forum pages and saw nothing but smack talk and ____ about the olsen twins. i guess the higher profile attracts some immature posters to those pages. maybe you can recommend a good page. as for what to expect from our team, we may have as many questions as you do. with so many new faces, it is hard to gauge. the defense has looked good in scrimmages, but perhaps only because the o-line is patched together for the moment. USC should be a good test. Expect a very physical defense, at least one big play on special teams, and perhaps a change in QB at some point during the game. We have two that Coach Bustle will likely want to see in game action if possible. Also may see a committee of RBs as none have really separated from the pack yet. Our most proven product is Fred Stamps. Perhaps one of the top 5 or 10 receivers in the country. Lou will double-cover him for sure.
Coach: Lou Holtz (22-25, 5th season)
2002 overall record: 5-7
Conference record: 3-5
Returning starters
Offense: 2
Defense: 6
Kicker/Punter: 1
2002 statistical leaders (* - returners)
Rushing: Corey Jenkins (655 yds)
Passing: Corey Jenkins (1,334 yds)
Receiving: Troy Williamson* (491 yds)
Tackles: Jonathan Martin (122)
Sacks: Langston Moore (9.5)
Interceptions: Dunta Robinson* (4)
Outlook: In the latest installment of the long-running football farce, "Poor Lou Holtz," the coach of the Gamecocks announced that his team has less talent than at any time since his first squad went 0-11. "Right now it looks like the darkest I've seen except for our first year," he mourned. It's true that almost all the guys who made the plays that took South Carolina to improbable back-to-back bowl games are gone. But it's also true that Holtz has put together three consecutive stellar recruiting classes -- and there are even rumors that in private, Poor Lou has told a few folks that he has as much talent as South Carolina has EVER had. The truth will come out on the field soon enough. The primary question about this team is the same as last year: Are the quarterbacks good enough to win in the SEC? Dondrial Pinkins started the last two games last year and will be the man this year. Carolina loves Pinkins' big arm and fast feet. The fact that he went through spring drills without throwing an interception raises Holtz's hopes that his command of the position will improve in his second season of Division I-A football. The other major offensive issue is whether or not Holtz follows through on his pledge to loosen the reins on son/offensive coordinator Skip. Holtz the younger would prefer to spread the field and throw the ball more, but Holtz the older used his veto power last year to stay ultra-conservative. The result was an offense that produced the fewest passing first downs in the league and eventually suffered a ghastly collapse in the second half of the season. The Gamecocks averaged just 11 points their final six games, and lost the last five. Will Lou really let Skip loosen it up? Answers start rolling in Aug. 30. Charlie Strong did fine work as defensive coordinator before moving on to Florida, but Holtz wasn't pleased with his unit's inability to generate sacks or create turnovers last year. New coordinator Chris Cosh will change from a three-man front to four, and will be asked to crank up the aggressiveness and turn up the heat on opposing offenses. His group will be light on senior leadership but long on talent and potential.
Keep an eye on: Backup quarterback Michael Rathe. The junior college transfer seems to be well-suited for the spread offense Skip Holtz favors over sledgehammer option football. If Skip really is calling the shots on offense this year, Rathe might fit into his plans -- especially if Pinkins struggles early.
Key game: Last year started coming apart with a 13-point loss to Virginia in the second game. This year the Cavaliers come to Columbia Sept. 6, and likely will bring a national ranking with them. An upset there would show that the Holtz magic of 2000 and 2001 has been recaptured. A loss, followed by trips to Georgia and Tennessee before the month is out, could set up the Gamecocks for another losing season.
It's a good year if. . .: South Carolina climbs back above .500 and takes its horde of diehard fans bowling again. The schedule is no bargain, but eight home games sure helps the cause. So does the fact that Tennessee has been shuffled up in the schedule to September, somewhat alleviating the annual late-season death march. And the East could be uncharacteristically vulnerable this year. If the young talent shows it's ready to play on this level, Holtz's genius reputation is restored -- but they may be a year away.
SEC Preview
Wish I was, sounds like a great place to visit and even better place for an upset :DQuote:

Man I can't wait for football to start. I've got a couple of questions for those who might be able to help me out, so here goes.
1) What's Devin Williams' status and who is Ross Corcoran?
2) Am I correct that out of last years recruiting class, Dwayne Bannister and Paul Eli were the only ones who were unable to join the team?
3) Can some one give me the lowdown on Travis Smothers and any other late signees or late juco signees I may have missed?
4) How badly are the Cajuns going to beat South Carolina?
5) Any news on the recruiting front? I see the Cajuns are in on several prospects from Texas. Jonathan Pendleton from Dallas Skyline (same school as Travis Ferguson) is one that they seem to have a pretty good shot at.
6) Any one have an updated roster, or happen to know what the new recruits jersey #'s are going to be?
7) Lastly, Any one going to Minneapolis?! That's the closest I think the Cajuns will ever be to me so I'm hoping to make it up there for that game. If I do, I want to make sure I'm not the only one sporting some Cajun clothing!
If you can help me out with some of these questions it would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
at 1:00 today, there were 16 tickets from the UL allotment of tickets for the South Carolina game left
Man, I didnt know we sold that much, how many tickets were we alotted so we can know how many were sold.

<blockquote><p align=justify>LOUISIANA La. — The Cajun Countdown is under way for Louisiana's 2003 football season opener at South Carolina.
Coach Rickey Bustle's squad, which had Monday off in order to begin the fall semester of classes, resumes practice today and stages the final full scale scrimmage of the preseason on Wednesday.
After that, the Cajuns' attention will turn to the Gamecocks and the Aug. 30 road game that begins the 12-game campaign.
Assistant coach Brian Jenkins will spend that time mulling his choices at running back and fullback, but he's not likely to reveal any choices soon.
"I'm pleased with all of them,” said Jenkins, who also oversees the Ragin' Cajun special teams. “They're all working hard and competing. They've yet to be told who will be the guy.”
That might not settle the issue, anyway, since Jenkins knows it will take more than one back to create a Cajun running attack this autumn.

“I’ve always been a two-to-three guy type of guy as a coach,” Jenkins said. “It’s the same situation at fullback.
“When you look at the season ahead, we’re going to need more than one to help us win.”
Competition has been fierce at running back, with veterans Chester Johnson and Dwight Lindon pushed by diminutive redshirt freshman Josh Harrison and walk-on Travis Smothers for snaps.
If one would separate from the rest, there is a job for the taking. For now, Jenkins is evaluating each candidate.
“They’re recognizing the offense and executing at a lot higher level, so that’s pleasing,” Jenkins said. “Right now, they’re working as a group and trying to be productive.”
At fullback, the leader is senior Wayne Stein. He got just eight carries in the 2002 season, spending more time blocking than rushing the ball, but he did slip out of the backfield for 20 receptions netting 116 yards and a touchdown.
In fact, it was Stein who got last Saturday’s scrimmage off to a solid start with a 9-yard screen pass from Jerry Babb.
Stein, who saw action in 22 games the last two seasons, is a leader by example in practice and in games.
Opelousas’ Ross Rix has shown the ability to help at both spots, with fullback his latest home.
Junior college transfer Travis Cones caught one pass Saturday, twisting a knee and sitting out the rest of the action.
As members of the Cajun offensive line get off the injury list and onto the field, life will get better for each of the players contending to carry the ball.
With the opener just 11 days away, the focus is on improving with each drill.
“This week, I want them to continue to be productive,” Jenkins said. “We want to put the offense in a position to move the ball.”
CAJUN CLIPPINGS: Wednesday’s scrimmage is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Cajun Field and is open to the public.

1.Williams status is uncertain at this point, he has appealed to be eligible (I think) this year. Corcoran is a freshman QB from Tampa that was recruited but did not sign with any school (other schools backed off him when it was reported he committed to Colgate). Ross was not offered by us until it became apparent that Bannister was not going to play for us.Quote:

2. Joe Scott (JC LB) came in the spring but left Bannister did not graduate HS and Eli is a prop this year.
3. Smothers has looked good at times in practice and I believe will see some playing time this year as we search for the best RB or RB's to help the team. If you have not already read it here is the Advertiser article on Smothers LINK.
4. 24-17 Cajuns Win!
5. Other than the 2 commitments so far, I have heard we are recruiting OL Geoff Berniard from STM and Tyler Benoit RB from Comeaux. Don't know much else at this point.
6. Try this link for updated roster. LINK
7. Can't travel that far but hope you get to make it
Other than the couple of USC fans who have visited here I see no mention of the game on there boards. Maybe it will pickup in the next week.Quote:

Oh, believe me....we are ready for football. To be quite honest, we feel pretty comfortable about our game with you guys. Your offense is way down and ours is about to let loose. Most USC fans are concentrating on our second and third games with UVA and UGA. These games will determine what kind of season we will have.
Not a flame....:hot: Just reality. I don't expect a blowout however. Lou Holtz will not allow a blowout. If we get a comfortable lead, he'll throttle way back and only put in the starters if you guys begin to threaten. But like I said before, you guys just don't seem to have the offense this year that you have had in the past.
Also, any of you who plan on making the trip, Columbia is a great city and our fans are some of the best in the world. You will be welcome anywhere you go. Plan to tailgate. It's a big tradition here. If you see a big party, most Gamecock fans will welcome you to join in with them.
Good luck! And let's play some FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!
