No prediction from me concerning solving the sedimentation issue. Just that with my health issues I don't expect to make it to 97, but I'm not going down without a fight.

I'm not sure but they had to asphalt the ditch banks on the road north of your neighborhood, to stop the road from washing away.
All because the lawn care company refused to stop spraying the edges with herbicide.

I thought this was already decided. Also can someone shed light on the barge sinking part?

The Corps of Engineers saying possibly opening Morganza spillway by June 2nd. No formal decision yet.

does that mean areas like butte la rose etc getting flooded? Lower St Martin?
Re: OT: Mississippi River Aquapocalypse 2019
Water levels in the basin are higher compared to 2011 when we were mostly dry. Flooding potential could depend on how many gates are opened at Morganza. They'll open up slowly. Still bad news for property owners, inside the spillway levees anyway you look.

As long as the top of the barge is above water they can refloat it by pumping the water out.
If it rains hard enough the area upstream of the barge may flood. If the barge is not put in the channel the area upstream WILL FLOOD.

Rob needs to switch to Decaf when a hurricane is in the gulf.

That makes sense. It seems like some shade tree engineering though.

It's a quick and simple solution to a problem without building flood gates,. Although flood gates would be more efficient, I don't think they can justify the cost. It works and the barge can be removed easily by refloating.

Not at all! If it works, it works. As Helmut pointed out, its cost-effective. Not really something we are used to when dealing with a government entity.

Local governments dealing with shortages of money are sometimes pretty good at coming up with cost effective solutions. Centralized governments that own the printing press? Not so much.
Sorry to take off topic.
Watching with great interest and with a sideways eye towards upcoming tropical season...may be a hell of a ride...

.............BTW.....I told Rob that he was my 3rd favorite weather dude after Nash Roberts And Rob Robbins!......he laughed......got to say that his credentials are most admirable!
Re: OT: Mississippi River Aquapocalypse 2019
Looks like Morganza will be opened the first few days in June. Water is already high in the basin so it could be worse than in 2011. We shall see.

I know the spillway is a wonderful habitat for wildlife and that it is chock full of all kinds of it. Does the wildlife that lives there have time to escape the flood waters whenever the Morganza is opened?

Some do some don't. Snakes and gators are fine. Deer and other hoved animals not so much. I'm thinking they will open slowly and probably not all the gates so the wildlife should have time to adapt.

They will be opening one bay at a time for four days, then pick up the pace after. I imagine many animals will make higher ground in that time.

I just found out they will be putting temporary pumps to pump rain water out in the case of heavy rains.
