LAFAYETTE — Over the last two weeks, one thing has become clear to UL football coach Rickey Bustle — these aren’t your typical Ragin’ Cajuns.
Bustle sees a swagger and confidence in his team, one he did not last year, when UL lost five straight games to open the season and then finished 3-9 overall and 3-4 in Sun Belt Conference play.
“We’re not doing what we did last year or the year before or the year before … it’s not in the vocabulary,” an optimistic Bustle said Monday at his weekly press conference.
Bustle said he first noticed a change in his team during spring practice and that sense of change was reinforced during fall drills in August.

The Cajuns piled up 667 total yards in pounding Kent State, 44-27, Saturday in their home opener.
The Cajuns (1-2) play Big 12 powerhouse Kansas State (2-1) this Saturday in Manhattan, Kan.
Asked if he thought his team felt it stood a chance against the heavily-favored Wildcats this week, Bustle was quick to answer.
“I think they believe that, I would hope they believe that,” he said.
“I get a sense of their confidence level, that’s probably the biggest thing. That and their maturity.
“I think they see it in each other. I think we’re thinking completely different than we have done in the past.”
No one believes that more than ULL quarterback Michael Desormeaux.
“I think right now that we’re playing as a very confident team,” said Desormeaux, who passed for a career-high 253 yards, rushed for 150 more and accounted for 403 yards of total offense against Kent State.
Desormeaux said the ULL team that will play Kansas State Saturday is nothing like the one that let a golden opportunity slip away a year ago at SEC member South Carolina.
The Cajuns, like this year at Illinois, were very much in that game, but wound up losing 28-14.
“We always go up there trying to win, but we didn’t have the confidence we have now,” he said of the 2007 game in South Carolina.
“We went up there and it was like, ‘wow — we’re in this game.’ But now, guys expect to be in the game so that’s the big difference. Now, it’s like ‘we’re in the game, let’s go and try to win.’ That’s the difference.”
Bustle said the success of the last two weeks has helped fuel the optimism around the ULL complex in recent days, but it has been the leadership provided by the team’s senior class that has made the biggest impact.
“We don’t have many (seniors), but you’ve got Derik Keys and Mike Desormeaux and (all of) those seniors are really a great group,” Bustle said.
Even the usually-reserved Tyrell Fenroy, who became ULL’s career leader in rushing and combined yardage Saturday, has gotten into the act of motivating the team.
“In the preseason, when we did a lot of team building activities as I like to call them, Tyrell stood up and said some things to the team,” Bustle said. “You could have heard a pin drop in there.”
The leadership shown by of the seniors has allowed Bustle and his staff to concentrate on other day-to-day tasks that have contributed to the team’s rise. That, he noted, hasn’t always been the case.
“I’m not having to call a meeting with them (seniors) every day to do this and do that … which I’ve done in the past,” Bustle said.
“They know what’s expected of them. And the good thing is that they’re spread out in a lot of different groups. They’re doing an excellent job.”
