Indoor practice area should be ready by January.
Barring unforeseen delays, several University of Louisiana athletic teams will be using the new indoor practice facility by the end of January 2007.
But contractors and university officials face a more pressing deadline in the construction area located in the heart of the UL athletic complex. They've got to get grass growing.
An overlooked part of the building of the new facility is the relocation of UL's football practice fields, and that work and turf growing needs to be completed by early August when the Ragin' Cajuns begin fall drills.
"The fields are part of the whole project," said UL physical plant director Bill Crist. "The construction is going to take what they called the humpback field and half of the first 100-yard field, so the first part is getting the dirt work, irrigation piping and seeding of the new field."
The practice field running alongside Cajundome Boulevard will be unchanged, and a new 100-yard field is being built adjacent to Reinhardt Drive.
"It's crucial that gets done," Crist said of the new field, "so we can get grass growing and have it usable for the fall."

"That's one of the big reasons we were so anxious to break ground," said Cajun football coach Rickey Bustle. "We had to move the one field, and by the fall we're going to need that."
The only other event that could be affected by the construction is a possible NCAA Regional Tournament at UL's Lamson Park softball facility. The practice fields have been used as warmup and batting practice fields in the past.
UL assistant athletic director for game management Sherry LeBas said the existing field next to Cajundome Boulevard and the intramural fields across the boulevard from the park will be used for warmups should UL earn a regional host site.
"We didn't want the building to affect our bid," said interim athletic director David Walker, "since the construction will be going on right next door. It's not going to affect our plans."
Crist said the recent dry spell has actually been a benefit to construction of the indoor facility, which will include a 120-yard artificial turf field and an attached wing that will house a basketball and volleyball practice court.
"The more they can get done when it's dry, the further along they'll be," Crist said. "It's a critical time for them because once you're out of the ground it can rain and it won't set you back much."
Workers are currently pouring concrete drill-shaft foundations and the building footings, and steel work should begin within six weeks. The contracted date for project completion is Jan. 29.
M. D. Descant, Inc., headquartered in Bunkie with offices across the state, is in charge of the project. Dwight Descant was a member of the then-USL football team when Cajun Field opened in 1971.
"He has a vested interest in this," Crist said. "It means a lot to him, and it helps to have a contractor like that."
Southern Structures, another local firm, is the metal building supplier, helping to assure timely arrival of the building and related materials.
"It seems like we have the right pieces falling together for things to move at a rapid pace," Crist said.
Funding of $2.9 million was approved in February for initial construction, and the university went back to the Legislative Budget Committee for an additional $600,000 to cover the bid's two alternate proposals.
One of those was to extend the facility from 100 yards to 120 to accommodate a full football field (100 yards plus two 10-yard end zones), and the other was for the shell structure for the additional basketball/volleyball wing. The additional funding was approved March 17.
"We're negotiating with the contractor to finish that part up," Crist said of the added wing. "We're hoping that will finish it out."
