Re: Ladarius Green Update
FYI Chargers re-signed Antonio Gates.
Re: Ladarius Green to Pittsburgh?
Would love to see him in the other Black and Gold. The Saints are thin at TE now.
Re: Ladarius Green to Pittsburgh?
Pee Wee is cashing in on his free agency. Good for him. A shame our local team isn't going after him.

Saints can't afford him.

Re: Ladarius Green to Pittsburgh?
Would've loved to see Packers or the Saints go after him, but I'm glad he gets an opportunity to shine. Hope he explodes into one of the league's best.
Re: Ladarius Green to Pittsburgh?
Would have liked to see him in NO but if his price is close to $3 mil/year, that may even be too high for the Saints. If he's never going to get a legit shot in SD, as the Chargers seem reluctant to do, I think Pittsburgh could work out well for him. He has a great QB who can get him the ball in Pittsburgh.

Plus, there's not much comparison between what Brees does for TEs vs. Roethlisberger. But it is what it is. Best of luck to him in the Steel City.
The Saints are focusing on the defensive side of the football, which is where they need immediate help. The decisions they make during the free agent signing period will dictate their decisions during the NFL Draft.

I'll take that wager then. Because $6-8 isn't going to happen. What are you basing that off of? Because I have not read anything out there saying that he will get that type of money. I'd be shocked if he gets anything north of $4 mil/year. If you look at the contracts of the TE's that are in the range you mentioned, almost all have had at least one or two years played in their rookie contracts where they posted very good numbers. Ladarius has never had that breakout type of performance. His best season (this season), he only posted 37/429/4. I know he was hurt, but he played extended time with Gates out due to suspension and never had any games that pop out at you. And he was largely nonexistent once Gates returned.

I'll take that action.
My guess.. something close to.. 3 years - $22-24 Million

Again, same thing I asked Brock, based off of what?

A big part of it is the cap going up, and the other is, look at the trend of bad contracts. Not saying Pee Wee would be a bad contract, I'm just following trends.. And the biggest commodity is the commodity that has potential.

Saints are reported to have come to agreement with Coby Fleener late today.

35 year old Ben Watson just got $4 million a year from the Ravens. Teams making signings at this point - especially of younger players - are going to overpay, and by and large have the cap space to do so. Look at the ridiculous contracts the Texans, Giants, and Jaguars have doled out so far. He also had several teams interested in him, and he never made it past his first official offer/visit; as the top available TE on the market, for him to take his first offer, it's safe to say they made him a great one. If he's making south of $6 million, it won't be by much.
And as I type, the Saints moved on to plan B. They just agreed to a 5-year deal with Coby Fleener, formerly of Stanford and the Indianapolis Colts. I have no idea on the dollar figure amount, just that it'll be creatively structured. I'm also expecting a Brees extension in the next couple weeks to create a fairly sizable amount of cap space going forward.
EDIT: Saints gave Fleener 5 years, $36 million. And he was below Green on the totem pole. Just to give you an idea.
Re: Ladarius Green to Pittsburgh?
While Roethlisberger most likely won't do for a TE what Bree's does, let's compare the stats over the last 4 years for 8 time Pro Bowler Antonio Gates (SD) to Heath Miller (PIT).
Gates - 58 games - 251 receptions - 2861 yards
Miller - 60 games - 255 receptions - 2705 yards
So while Gates is a much more well known TE and the star of the Sand Diego receiving corps, the starting TE in Pittsburgh (Miller) has been utilized just as much as Gates over the last few years.
Heath Miller announced his retirement last month. I think Ladarius is coming into a great passing offense and his upside is very high.

If Roethlisberger can stay on the field, they'll have a very potent offense. They're absolutely loaded at the skill positions.

He's married now so hopefully not anymore rape trials.
Re: Ladarius Green to Pittsburgh?
...and I'm not sold on Fleener. He was Andrew Luck's roommate and TE at Stanford. Then Luck and Fleener both go to the Colts. The only think I think Fleener has going for him is Brees' ability to make him look good.
My opinion: Ladarius Green > Colby Fleener

Absolutely. The one thing that I'd give Fleener over Green is availability; he's been fairly healthy thusfar in his career, whereas Green has shown some possible concussion issues. That's scary. But if both guys are a go, I'm taking Green 10/10 times.
That said, I'm optimistic about a Fleener/Brees duo.
