TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - UL's 11th-ranked softball squad never was able to get anything going offensively against third-ranked Alabama on Saturday, and Chrissy Owens was the reason.
The Crimson Tide's pitching ace scattered six hits and struck out nine in a seven-inning shutout effort.
Alabama remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-0 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns Saturday in UA's own Easton Spring Fling tournament.
The Cajuns (20-3) had a 5-2 win against Seton Hall Saturday, after an 18-0 win over the Pirates in Friday's opening round of the double-round-robin event. UL will meet Alabama (19-0) once again at 1:30 p.m. today in the final game of the tournament.
UL only managed to get one runner to third base against Owens (9-0), who has five shutouts this year and has allowed only two runs in 54 innings.
Her Tide teammates got the only runs Owens would need in the first inning off UL starter Brittany Cuevas (11-1), who suffered her first loss of the season. Brittany Rogers led off with a single and eventually scored on Charlotte Morgan's ground ball.

Alabama added two in the fifth on Michelle Menningmann's leadoff homer and Mandy Burford's RBI single, and put it away in the sixth when Kelley Montalvo drew a bases-loaded walk. Rogers followed with a two-run single to right field in a three-run inning.
Cuevas allowed seven hits and five earned runs while walking five and fanning two.
UL put two runners on base three times in the game, including first-inning singles by Holly Tankersley and Desi Chatman in the first, but Owens worked out of trouble each time.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - UL's 11th-ranked softball team was two outs away from handing third-ranked Alabama its first loss of the season, before a seventh-inning home run changed those plans.
One inning later, another home run gave the Ragin' Cajuns their second loss in as many days at the Easton Spring Fling.
Crimson Tide shortstop Kellie Eubanks' solo homer in the seventh negated a 3-2 UL lead and forced extra innings, and Mandy Burford's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning provided Alabama with a 6-3 win over the Cajuns in the double-round-robin event's final game.
It was Burford's second homer of the game, after her two-out shot to center field in the first inning had given the Crimson Tide an early 2-0 lead.
The Cajuns (20-4), who suffered a 6-0 loss to the unbeaten Crimson Tide (21-0) on Saturday, had taken a 3-2 lead in the fifth on Codi Runyan's leadoff homer - three innings after Runyan's two-run single in the second inning had brought UL back from that early 2-0 deficit.

The two homers came off Cajun starter Brittany Cuevas (11-2), who held Alabama in check after the first inning until the Tide's late uprising. Cuevas scattered seven hits and fanned six without a walk and didn't allowed an earned run until the seventh-inning homer.
The Cajuns, who open Sun Belt Conference play at home Wednesday against Middle Tennessee, pushed across their two second-inning runs off Bama starter Charlotte Morgan. Meagan Godwin led off with a single and Melissa Verde reached on Morgan's error, and Karli Hubbard's one-out bunt single loaded the bases before Runyan's sharp single to center scored Godwin and Verde.
Alabama ace Chrissy Owens (10-0) came on in relief of Morgan in the top of the eighth and picked up the win, even though UL's Holly Tankersley singled in the inning and reached second with one out on a wild pitch. Owens had pitched a complete-game six-hitter in the Tide's Saturday win.

Even though the Lady Cajuns lost I think it will help them in the long run. Now they know where they stand against the top teams in the country.Quote:

When UL's softball team opens Sun Belt Conference play this week, the Ragin' Cajuns will do it in a big way.
The 13th-ranked Cajun squad will play six conference games in a five-day period beginning today when UL (20-4) hosts Middle Tennessee in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The two teams will also play an 11 a.m. single game on
Then, the Cajuns will head to Boca Raton, Fla., for a Saturday-Sunday series against new Sun Belt member Florida Atlantic. The teams will play two games at 5 p.m. Saturday and a noon Sunday finale.
"It's crazy right now," said UL coach Stefni Lotief.
But the compacted schedule was the Cajuns' own doing, and Middle Tennessee helped UL with the scheduling. The Blue Raiders (9-12) agreed to move their Lafayette trip up 10 days so that UL could take part in the prestigious Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., next week.
UL, coming off a split of four games in last weekend's Easton Spring Fling in Tuscaloosa, Ala., which included two losses to unbeaten and third-ranked Alabama, will get some relief from the tight scheduling with the Sun Belt's new format.

In previous years, teams would play a four-game series, with doubleheaders on back-to-back days. With three new teams added to the league, bringing the softball participation to nine schools, the format has changed to a first-day doubleheader and a single game on the second day.
"The four-game series was almost dangerous at times," Lotief said. "The travel involved made it tough because it's not easy to travel in this league, and when you see the same batters and pitchers 12 to 15 times in a weekend it can get a little intense."
UL enters the Middle Tennessee series ranked 13th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball national poll, down from 11th last week after the two losses to the Crimson Tide (21-0).
"That put us in an environment that wasn't as comfortable as playing at our home park," Lotief said. "It's a maturation process. But our girls out-hit Alabama both games. Some of them swung well and some have to make some adjustments."
Shortstop Codi Runyan and pitcher/designated player Holly Tankersley each hit over .400 during the Tuscaloosa meet, and hold .403 and .347 batting averages respectively with a combined 15 home runs.
"Both of them had great weekends," Lotief said. "They set the tone at the plate for us, especially Codi. You can't do much better than a first-pitch home run."
Tankersley is 8-2 in the circle and will likely throw in the opener, with freshman Brittany Cuevas figuring on the second-game start.

Anyone know what happened in Game 1 against Middle? The last I heard Cajuns were up 4-1.
Nevermind, Jay answered my question. Cajuns won 4-1. ..O..
Cuevas got blown up for 4 runs in the 2nd inning of the 2nd game and the CAJUNS are down 4-1 in the bottom of the 4th inning.
.~. .~. GEAUX CAJUNS GEAUX.~. .~.
Cajuns lost 2nd game, 5-3Quote:

I guess we don't have the consistent talent and pitching. It seems like Cuevas has fallen into a bad streak, that's 3 games she has dropped in one week after going 11-0.
