Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
https://ragincajuns.com/common/contr...7/D5N_3096.jpg
A spectacular inaugural season for Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Basketball guard Mylik Wilson culminated in his first postseason award as he was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year on Thursday in a vote by the league's head coaches and media.
Wilson, a native of Rayville, La., led all Sun Belt freshmen in scoring (11.4), rebounds (5.5), steals (2.4) and minutes played (34.0). The selection of Wilson as the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year marked the sixth time a Ragin' Cajuns basketball player earned the award and the first since Shawn Long was selected in 2013.
During the regular-season for Louisiana, Wilson finished fourth overall in scoring (11.4), was tied for third in rebounds (5.5), second in assists (2.9) and led the team in steals (2.4).
Wilson scored in double figures 15 times during the 2019-20 season, highlighted by a career-high 30 points in a come-from-behind win at Appalachian State on Jan. 6. He posted his first career double-double two days earlier against Troy, scoring 18 points and pulling down a career-best 13 rebounds.
In Sun Belt Conference play, Wilson averaged 12.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game to lead all freshmen with his 2.5 steals tied for the most overall in league action.
One of only nine players at the Division I level during the 2019-20 season to average 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals per game, Wilson joins a list of 21 freshmen (includes James Harden and Zion Williamson) dating back to the 1992-93 season to post similar numbers. _

Congrats to Mr. Wilson. He has a chance to become a great player at this level and in the NBA

Re: Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
Pretty brutal for Johnson to not even make 3rd team. He was 6th in the league in scoring average and 7th in rebounding average.

Reads like he would be a 2nd teamer on the low end and combined a squeaker for 1st team on the top end.

Congrats Mylik! Easily, the biggest positive of the regular season.

I felt bad about posting here and not saying congrats to Mylik, very well deserved.
So here is as quick pop quiz. Wilson's 307 points is the 3rd highest total by a Freshman in the Marlin era. Can anyone guess who #1 and #2 are without looking it up?

Re: Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
Cedric Russell and Bryce Washington. What do I win?
-
Re: Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
Shawn Long and Elfrid Payton.
are my guesses.
-
Re: Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
Ah yes, Local probably wins
-
Re: Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
No you are actually closer as Long is #1 by a mile with 511.
As for the other guesses
Washington 231
Payton 229
Russell 194

Re: Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
I got Long.
So if not Payton, Washington and Russel, I am not sure who #2 could be.

He was a Redshirt Freshman. He did not play at Miss State, so he got here as a Freshman.

Just a wild stab in the dark......
Justin Miller?
I seem to remember him having a pretty good freshman campaign.

Re: Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
So under Marlin:
Long--Playing overseas in NZL and being hugely successful
Justin Miller--Playing at Detroit Mercy, but never had long lasting success
Mylik Wison--Currently playing Cajuns
Bryce Washington--Played professionally in Canada
Elfrid Payton--Playing in the NBA
Cedric Russell--Will probably play professionally overseas
Not bad company for Mylik to be in. I really think this kid is going to be special for us.

Justin Miller is averaging 19 points for every 40 minutes he plays. Problem is he is only playing 21 minutes a game.
Even with that limited playing time he has increased his real game scoring over what it was last year at UL.

Re: Louisiana's Wilson Named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
Congratulations Mylik! Your efforts were rewarded.
Good luck tomorrow.

On a terrible team at that. Go figure.

Isn't that what he should be doing on a terrible team?

Don't forget Frank Bartley, played professionally in Canada and now in Spain.

There is no question he could have helped this team, this year.
Marlin lost me this year with his constant purges and reboots.
Otherwise I was a consistent supporter.
