Cajuns add Fontainebleau standout Ulm

LOUISIANA La. — Matt Ulm only had four receptions during his senior prep season, but it was his all-around game at tight end that put the Fontainebleau High standout on many schools’ highly-desired list.
Ulm added his name to the University of Louisiana’s list late last week, giving Ragin’ Cajun coach Rickey Bustle a verbal commitment to be a part of the school’s 2005 recruiting class.
“I took an unofficial visit this summer, and I really liked the campus,” said the 6-foot-3, 245-pounder. “And it’s close to home.”
Ulm said that he planned to make an official visit in January to the UL campus, and does not plan to take any other visits after being recruited by Indiana and UL Monroe.
Ulm was one of the leaders of Fontainebleau’s unprecedented march in the Class 5A playoffs. The school had never before won a playoff game, but compiled an 8-2 regular-season record and an 11-3 overall mark, the best record in school history.

The squad of coach Larry Favre won three playoff games before falling to perennial power West Monroe in the semifinals. Fontainebleau was co-champion of District 5-5A.
“Coach Favre definitely turned the program around,” said Ulm, who earned 5-5A All-District honors. “I went to the Middle Tennessee game this year, but that was the only time I saw them (UL) play because I was really focused on my own season and not worrying about a lot else.”
Ulm was primarily a run blocker in the Fontainebleau system, but said he was excited about the impact that Cajun coaches sought from the tight end position.
“They said they try to get 30 throws to the tight end,” he said. “It’s probably a lot like my school in that they’d rather run if they can be successful there.
“My strong points are that I can get open over the middle and catch the ball in tough situations. Between now and then, I want to improve my speed some.”
Ulm plans to enroll in summer school to take part in summer workouts with the current Cajun players, after a final spring of throwing the javelin for the Fontainebleau track and field squad.
Ulm is the seventh prep commitment to the Cajuns’ recruiting class along with junior college wide receiver Corey Fredrick. He is also the second tight end in that group, joining Lafayette High’s Kyle Pirtle.
