Mayor-President Proposes Corridor Between Athletics & Moncus
Mayor-President Monique Boulet wants to improve walkability in the city by building wide walking and bicycling paths, for instance, from Moncus Park on Johnston Street to Bertrand Drive to the University of Louisiana athletic complex at Cajun Field, moving utility poles to one side of the street and putting more distance between them to reduce visual clutter.

This is excellent. When does the work begin?
Re: Mayor-President Proposes Corridor Between Athletics & Moncus
Any more walkability is a good thing. As much as we love it, Lafayette is a hodge podge of development that looks like no one talked to one another while building anything. Sidewalks abruptly end if they exist at all. In most cases there is no way to get from A to B if there's any significant distance between the two. You flat out need a vehicle if you don't want to get run over walking or biking.
The city has made efforts with a few bike lanes which is nice. Looks like more baby steps here. Good news especially since it's in the vicinity of the athletic complex.

In exchange, the city will relinquish to the state Department of Transportation ownership of 3.87 miles of Ambassador Caffery Parkway between Johnston Street and Bertrand Drive.
What does the state get out of owning that strip of Ambassador Caffery? Why would they?

If I remember correctly, the state won’t “get” anything out of this.
What is happening is that LCG and state will be exchanging responsibility of particular roads.
By LCG taking over that portion of Bertran, it can design any improvements by its own standards. No consultation will be need to be made with the state whose standards standards are a bit more onerous.
For its part, the state will take over responsibility and maintenance of an equal footage of lanes somewhere else in the parish.
This happens often

that is correct. It's a jurisdiction maintenance thing.

I'm sure it's the usual timeline. Will start sometime after the next election.
