According to the Daily Advertiser, well, the two references I can find, it is the team.
When Augie first arrived the U(S)L mascot was interchangeably the Bulldogs and Ragin Cajuns. Augie's Doggies was a slick moniker that was used for the team in the early days Augie's tenure. It was to bring attention and excitement to the new coach and the new direction he was taking the football program. After a few years, it was not used much as Ragin Cajuns had replaced Bulldogs as the identity of the program
………Ok just kinda confirmed my thoughts…..back in F-berry days we had Old Louis Age, Leroy Boudreaux, and Terragano the great baseballer that all came from St Aug…..when Coach Irwin Sibile left, I took over NOla recruiting and he had lined up some St Aug guys early…..after seeing film and talking to other HS coaches, they were very loaded with talent and I had a former UL player who had finished and was going to coach at Nichols with me….I signed about 5 or 6 and more wanted to come and some did after transferring like from NDame and TCU….so Elton John comes on the radio singing “I can’t write no more of etc”…..I tell Randy Raymond that we have enough Augie (St Aug) players to be doggies like what we started calling the guys here……yea I started singing it and we would crack up laughing! I guess some used it for when Augie came, but just about all the Augie Doggies wound up playing that I got here!……What Bankrupt posted is on the money but my story just pre dates the other!……I can’t write no more Augie Doggies!Quote:
