The University of Louisiana is already bowl-eligible and another win could solidify the Cajuns’ bowl status. But to get there, UL will have to defeat Sun Belt Conference champion Troy.
The teams square off at 6 p.m. today at Cajun Field.
“I think it is (a great motivator) and you add to that the fact that Troy is undefeated (in Sun Belt play),” UL coach Rickey Bustle told RaginCajuns.com of going for their seventh win. “We know that we are going to have to play and execute a great game. Troy has played a lot of games that were over at halftime and we are going to have to fight hard to make it a four quarters game.
“It is an important game,” Bustle said. “It’s giving us the chance at a seventh win, which hasn’t been accomplished here since 1993. It improves our bowl chances also. … Six wins wasn’t enough last year.”

The game highlights today’s abbreviated state football schedule, which also features Middle Tennessee at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Tulane at SMU.
Troy (8-3, 7-0) leads the SBC in total offense (475.4 yards per game) and scoring offense (31.7 points per game) behind quarterback Levi Brown (270-417-8, 3,575 yards, 19 TDs). Brown leads the SBC in total offense (328.3 ypg), passing average per game (325 ypg) and pass efficiency (148.0).
“He’ll run a little bit,” Bustle said of Brown. “He’s an accurate passer. Levi is an all-around quarterback. He can find the pocket and get rid of the ball and he’s hard to get to.”
The Trojans rank fifth in the SBC in total defense (404.7 ypg) and will face a Cajuns team that is sixth in the league in total offense (343.5 ypg).
ULL quarterback Chris Masson (206-348-7, 2,219, 9 TDs) is sixth in the SBC in passing yardage per game, while the Cajuns (6-5, 4-3) leads the league in interceptions with 15.
“We cannot turn the football over to them,” Bustle said of Troy. “We need to be patient but tackle well — the same approach we had with Middle Tennessee. We will need our guys to make some plays.”
