Quarterbacks
Fall developments: Sophomores Chris Masson and Brad McGuire battled in the spring and fall to replace departed starter Michael Desormeaux. Masson won the job a few days ago going into Week 1. Redshirt freshman Blaine Gautier will likely see some action to change the pace.
Lingering questions: Masson has played three games at quarterback and thrown nine passes in college, so he's young. How will he respond under the pressure? McGuire has made one start and thrown 30 balls at this level. Gautier has no college experience.
Starter lost: Michael Desormeaux.
Others lost: None.
Projected starter: Chris Masson (So., 6-2, 211).
Other returnees: Brad McGuire (So., 6-2, 210), Blaine Gautier (R-Fr., 6-0, 200), Brady Thomas (R-Fr., 6-2, 180), Keldric White (R-Fr., 6-4, 196).
Newcomers: Emile Joseph (Fr., 5-11, 190).
Running backs
Fall developments: Tyrell Fenroy wrapped up his record-setting career last fall, leaving a big hole to fill. Senior Undrea Sails is the projected starter after seeing limited action last season, with redshirt freshman Draylon Booker being the other top option. Senior Geoffrey McCullough is expected to carry the load at fullback.
Lingering questions: The returning rushers have 72 carries at the DI level. Sails and sophomore Julian Shankle have been banged up. Mamou's Robert Walker was expected to provide much-needed speed but had his ACT score thrown out and is ineligible.
Starter lost: RB Tyrell Fenroy.
Others lost: FB Chancellor Roberson.
Projected starters: RB Undrea Sails (Sr., 5-8, 207); FB Geoffrey McCullough (Sr., 5-11, 217).
Other returnees: RB - Draylon Booker (R-Fr., 6-0, 188); Julian Shankle (So., 5-10, 202); Yobes Walker (R-Fr., 5-11, 205); Matt Dupre (Sr., 6-0, 200). FB - Matt Desormeaux (Jr., 6-1, 232); Ian Roberts (R-Fr., 5-11, 199).
Newcomers: FB - John Simons (Fr., 5-11, 220); Joel Banks (Fr., 6-0, 215).
Wide receivers
Fall developments: Losing Jason Chery and Derrick Smith will be eased by depth and balance. Senior Louis Lee and juniors Marlin Miller and Richie Falgout are the main threats. Sophomore Pierre Hill, junior college transfers Andrew “Rico” Joseph and Vernon Wolfe and true freshman Javone Lawson will play, too.
Lingering questions: None of the returning players have proven to be dependable primary receivers. Miller sat out last year due to academics and might be rusty. Hill, Joseph and Lawson are still young. Wolfe played only half of last year.
Starter lost: Jason Chery.
Others lost: Derrick Smith; Caleb Rubin; Verlin Moore; Jawanza Mitchell.
Projected starters: Louis Lee (Sr., 5-11, 190); Marlin Miller (Jr., 5-11, 185).
Other returnees: Richie Falgout (Jr., 6-0, 185); Pierre Hill (So., 6-0, 165).
Newcomers: Andrew “Rico” Joseph (So., 5-10, 177); Vernon Wolfe (Jr., 6-1, 180); Javone Lawson (Fr., 6-1, 180); Ross Goodlett (So., 6-0, 189); Ashton LeBlanc (Fr., 5-10, 175); Julien Troullier (Fr., 6-0, 190).
Tight ends
Fall developments: Starter Erik Jones is gone, but two capable starters are back in sophomore Ladarius Green and senior Luke Aubrey. They combined for 8 touchdown catches last season and could do even more damage this year. The new quarterbacks should be able to rely on that tandem throughout the season.
Lingering questions: Jones was known more as a blocker, while Green and Aubrey are bigger threats in the air. Green has to improve his blocking and shake off a tough fall camp. Aubrey has yet to produce over an entire season.
Starter lost: Erik Jones.
Others lost: None.
Projected starter: Ladarius Green (So., 6-6, 229).
Other returnees: Luke Aubrey (Sr., 6-5, 247); Brendan Wilson (R-Fr., 6-5, 228); Dusty Mack (Sr., 6-3, 222); Brandon Williams (R-Fr., 6-3, 252).
Newcomers: Ian Thompson (Fr., 6-4, 208); Jacob Maxwell (Fr., 6-4, 220).
Offensive line
Fall developments: All five starters are back up front. Center Chris Fisher, left guard Brad Bustle, left tackle Kyle Pirtle, right guard Ian Burks and right tackle Jonathan Decoster made 59 of 60 starts last year. Burks has missed some time in fall camp, but redshirt freshman Jaron Odom has shown he is capable of playing.
Lingering questions: There is more depth than last season, but the line has been hit hard by injuries. Junior Nasser Jamal was hurt last year. Odom and fellow redshirt freshmen Leonardo Bates and Sean Osborne have yet to play in a college game.
Starter lost: None.
Others lost: Brad Bryant.
Projected starters: LT - Kyle Pirtle (Sr., 6-6, 311); LG - Brad Bustle (Sr., 6-3, 302); C - Chris Fisher (Sr., 6-3, 285); RG - Ian Burks (Jr., 6-4, 295); RT - Jonathan Decoster (Jr., 6-5, 305).
Other returnees: Matthew Autrey (So., 6-3, 299); Leonardo Bates (R-Fr., 6-3, 327); Nasser Jamal (Jr., 6-6, 280); Jaron Odom (R-Fr., 6-7, 337); Sean Osborne (R-Fr., 6-6, 260); Kyle Plouhar (So., 6-7, 290); Josh Robinson (So., 6-6, 295); Evan Ruiz (R-Fr., 6-5, 300); Byrnes Tatford (R-Fr., 6-2, 255); Colin Windsor (Jr., 6-5, 290).
Newcomers: Daniel Lemelle (Fr., 6-3, 265); Robert Robinson (Fr., 6-4, 260); Ashton Tyler (Fr., 6-6, 275).
