Senior defensive lineman Derreck Dean has fought all the obstacles of inner city life and tragedy, including Hurricane Katrina. The New Orleans native’s success in college has been driven by questions concerning his size and background. The Cajun Redzone spoke with one of the teams inspirational leaders during UL’s Media Day.

BJ, that was a great interview with Dean. He's always been one of my favorite Cajun football players. He is one driven machine. I like to isolate on his play during games and watch how explosive he is. He's a bit undersized to be handling the middle, but he does it very well. I believe he's going to have his best year yet... along with the rest of our defense.

While he may not be the most talented or gifted athlete, he is the most committed football athlete on campus. He plays all out, never leaves anything on the football field. You need kids like Dean and McGuire in the program because of their commitment and leadership skills. Both are great examples to other athletes in the program.
