After watching Deon Wallace school all of his Hiram Clarke neighborhood buddies playing street football, a peer told the 11-year-old, "You're pretty good, but I bet you won't come out to my little league team and do that."
Which is the wrong thing to say — tell Wallace he cannot do something.
So Wallace accepted the challenge and quickly made an impression on the youth league coaches. They played him at safety because he was tough and at quarterback because he was a leader.
"He's determined," said Matt Malatesta, national recruiting adviser for rivals.com. "That goes back to his background. He's got a chip on his shoulder. That comes from being a street guy and that comes from being 5-8."
Off the field, the laid-back Wallace calls himself "a mellow cat."
But on the field, Wallace is flashy, brash and to put it simply "the man."
Wallace helped Worthing advance to the second round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs after finishing in a three-way tie for the District 22-4A crown.
Wallace rushed for 1,690 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. He also had 16 catches — four of which were TDs.

Despite his individual accomplishments, Wallace credits his teammates with helping him get noticed by college recruiters.
"It feels like the guys really believed in me," said Wallace, who is considering Colorado, Kansas State and Louisiana-Lafayette. "They still want to see me succeed. That motivates me also. When other players look up to you, that says a lot. But we were a team. It was all for one and one for all."
Still, there is no denying that it was Wallace's play that helped the Colts the most this season.
"We had him listed as a top junior, but with a kid that's 5-8 you're waiting for him to break down or get injured or not rush for 100 yards," Malatesta said. "But he never failed. He did a great job in district. A lot of scouts don't look at some of the inner-city schools that hard. HISD had an up year. Deon led his team to the playoffs out of a tough district."
Wallace is a different type of player than some of the other top running backs in the area. Port Arthur Memorial's Jamaal Charles, who has committed to Texas, and Lufkin's Jorvorskie Lane, who has committed to Texas A&M, are considerably bigger than Wallace.
"Those guys can just run over guys," Malatesta said. "Deon has to really sell himself with the likes of a Jamaal Charles or a Jorvorskie Lane out there. These guys run over 16-year-olds."
Wallace lacks the size to overpower a defender, but he possesses the speed to outrun them.
"Deon can make a guy who has the angle on him miss," Malatesta said. "Here's a 5-8 kid trying to find his way in this group. He's bucking the trend."

This would be a huge pickup for the Cajuns. Many people are compairing this kid to Darren Sproles of Kansas State.
-
I just went to Rivals.com to read about Deon Wallace & guess what. LSU has now been "calling" Deon "off and on".
Ironic huh.
-
Sounds like he is a Barry sanders prototype!:<--:
-
Sounds like a good player, hope to see him in a Cajun uniform in the future.
-
He is rated as a 3 star recruit on rivals but the concensus is he loved his visit to Kansas State. I would love to get him but right now i think its an outside shot. I am a rivals member and the film they have of him from his jr year is very impressive.
-
We'll see if Bustle can pull him away from KState or not. Knowing that we haven't had a thousand yard runner anytime, helps us in his decision knowing he could probably come in and start soon or see some playing time.

The local television stations have just reported that Deon Wallace has just given a verbal committment to the cajuns.
-
If this is true, it is HUGE!!
-
This is enormously huge, Geez I hope this is true,
What TV station reported this? This guy seems like he could be the real deal too, I hope he's not a prop though.
