<blockquote><p align=justify><b>CAJUNS SWEEP TWO GAME SERIES WITH 9-3 WIN OVER SIENA</b>

LOUISIANA La.- Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns improved to7-2 on the season as they defeated the Siena 9-3 Wednesday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field in Lafayette.

Fans saw a pitching carousel for both squads as a total of thirteen hurlers were used to decide the game.

France Cardinale took his first win of the season for Louisiana by pitching one inning, allowing one run on one hit while striking out a batter.

James Pacifice surrendered two runs on three hits working 2/3 of an inning and taking the loss for Siena.

Ryan Core got the Cajuns on the board first when he turned on a 2-2 pitch and drove it over the right field wall with one gone in the bottom of the second.

Siena answered with one run in the top of the fourth when Billy Lazio and Tony Cippolla both singled. Lazio would later score on fielder’s choice

In the bottom of the fourth, Jason Rodriguez walked and advanced to second on a passed ball before Brad Saloom also drew a walk on a full count.


Justin Bourque lined a single into right center scoring Justin Merendino, who doubled to center to start the bottom of the fifth.

In inning six, Brad Saloom laid down a bunt single to reach first and came around to score on a Tatford double. Tatford moved over to third on a Devon Bourque single to left. Bourque stole second. Leadoff hitter John Coker drew a walk on a 3-1 count to load the bases for Merendino who took ball four earning the RBI bringing the score to 4-2.

Saints designated hitter Brian Schmotzer opened the top of the seventh with a solo shot over the right field wall pulling Siena to within one.

Five runs scored in the seventh would add the exclamation point on the victory for UL. The Cajuns looked to add insurance as Jason Rodriguez led off with a walk and stole second. Rodriguez moved over to third on a Justin Bourque sacrifice bunt. Saloom would single into left center, plating Rodriguez. Saloom stole second before Devon Bourque and Coker both walked to load the bases. Saloom crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Merendino turned on a 2-2 pitch and roped it down the first base line for a double scoring two more. Merendino came around to the plate when Landry slapped a single to center.

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns leave tomorrow for a three game weekend series against the #9 ranked Wichita State Shockers before returning to action at home Wed., March 10 to play a make up game against Nicholls.

LOUISIAN La. - The Ragin’ Cajuns got seven pitchers into action and got extensive playing time for a handful of other players who hadn’t seen early-season action. They also got a 9-3 victory over Siena College that extended their winning streak to five games.

The win gave the Cajuns (7-2) the short-series sweep after a 19-6 Tuesday win, following three straight wins over Stony Brook over the weekend.

“We were supposed to go 5-0 in these games,” said Cajun coach Tony Robichaux, “so it’s a positive for us to be able to get looks at everybody and still win. We tried to get everybody some playing time.”

The Cajuns used every available pitcher that hadn’t thrown during the five-game homestand, and that group scattered nine hits and struck out eight Siena (3-5) hitters. However, Saints coach Tony Rossi said his club also reached some of its goals despite the two losses.

“We’re starting five sophomores, so we’re pretty young,” Rossi said. “Our idea on this trip is to get innings in. We got all our offensive players and a lot of our pitchers in.

“We’re not pleased with the outcome, but I’m pleased with the way we played ... we’ll be okay by the time we start our league play.”

In contrast to Tuesday’s game in which Louisiana scored 12 runs in the first three innings, the Saints were still very much in the contest until the Cajuns erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brad Saloom’s RBI single, Justin Merendino’s two-run double and Josh Landry’s RBI single were the biggest hits in that explosion.

“It felt pretty good to get our bats going,” said Saloom. “It was a big week for us. Everyone’s been able to play and everyone’s produced, and that’s what we’re supposed to do. We’ve got a lot of guys stepping up and we’ve got to take advantage of it.”

Cajun starter Jeff Morgan allowed only one hit and faced the minimum in his three innings and battery mate Ryan Core’s second-inning solo homer gave UL Lafayette an early lead. However, Shawn Hampton’s infield grounder plated Billy Lazio in the fourth to tie the game, and Siena’s Tony Cipolla got the fifth of his six hits in the series to score Lazio in the sixth to tie it again 2-2.

Justin Bourque’s single scored Merendino in the fifth for the Cajuns’ run in between, and UL Lafayette took the lead for good in the sixth with two runs on Jeffries Tatford’s RBI double and Merendino’s walk with the bases loaded off loser James Pacifico (0-1).

The two runs gave the win to reliever Franco Cardinale (1-0), the fourth of seven Cajun pitchers. He allowed a solo homer to Brian Schmotzer in the seventh before the hosts exploded in the bottom of that frame.

Saloom had hits in each of the last three innings, Tatford had the first two hits of his career and Devin Bourque also got his first Cajun hit.

“We know now we can run for people and do some switching, and we won’t be coming with people that haven’t played,” Robichaux said.

“It’s going to take everybody before it’s over.”
