Former Senator on Trial in Monroe

MONROE, La. (AP) - Former state Sen. Charles Jones' federal tax
fraud is set to begin in U.S. District Court in Monroe and is
estimated to last one to two weeks.
The News-Star reported on Sunday that the trial would begin
Monday.
His trial had been set for last fall, but his defense attorney,
Mike Small of Alexandria, became involved in a three-month trial in
southern Louisiana.
Jones was indicted in February 2008 on tax fraud charges and
entered a not guilty plea. Jones is charged with two counts of
making and subscribing a false tax return and one count of tax
evasion.
The indictment alleges Jones intentionally claimed much lower
amounts for his gross receipts or sales in 2000 and his earned
income in 1999.
