I learned about this watching Deepwater Horizon. Mark Wahlberg taught me all about it.
My dad and his brothers caught lots of catfish in the 1920's noodling the Lusaskuna and Yalobusha rivers in N. Mississippi. They called it grappling , but same technique. Dad's record was a 52 lb flathead. You couldn't pay me enough to to it.
After getting spiked a couple times as a kid by already caught catfish I know I could never noodle or grapple.
Grapple is a better description
The proper technique on really big fish has you belly to belly with it when it clears the hole or log it was in. The real danger is drowning if you lose your footing and can't disengage with the fish.. Or reaching into a submerged hole for a catfish and finding a 7'gator or 70 lb alligator snapping turtle.Quote:
