Normally, the current Cajuns would play an exhibition game against an alumni team, but the NCAA has set a uniform start date this season for Feb. 20. Any games played before that date this year would count toward the team's 56-game schedule.
UL coach Tony Robichaux said the NCAA is going to pass a rule next year that will allow teams to play an alumni game the weekend prior to opening day. He was frustrated not being able to have an alumni game this year, but he's glad fans get a chance to come out and see his players in action.
"This gives the public a chance to meet the team formally and gives us a chance to simulate a game," said Robichaux, whose Cajuns open the season Feb. 20 against Nebraska. "It's kind of like a second opening day.
"Our guys get a chance to come out and break in their cleats, so hopefully opening day doesn't feel like something totally new."
After coming into last season ranked in multiple top 25 polls, UL is receiving little love this year in the preseason. The Cajuns were picked by Sun Belt coaches to finish fifth in the league.
That's something Robichaux can understand, especially considering the fact that UL lost four of its top pitchers from last season and struggled most of the year defensively and offensively. Still, when it came time to vote in the league's preseason poll, Robichaux gave the Cajuns his first-place vote.
To him, that lets his players know that he believes in them and their potential.
Sun Belt coaches obviously believe in designated hitter Scott Hawkins and reliever Justin Robichaux. Both were named to the league's preseason All-Sun Belt team - and are ready for Fan Day.
"It's great for the community and great for the players to experience, especially the newcomers," Justin Robichaux said. "The guys from out of state might have never experienced the type of support we have over here."
