Clay Jennings

<center><table border=6><td><img src="https://forumeus.com/images/people/jennings-clay-2003-a(400).jpg"></td></table><p align=justify>A former athlete in the Southland Conference, Clay Jennings returned to his native state of Texas in March, 2001, to become Sam Houston State’s secondary coach. Jennings played against the Bearkats in 1994 as a member of the University of North Texas Eagles Southland Conference championship team.

In his first season at Sam Houston State, Jennings coached a defensive secondary that helped the Bearkats to rank third in the SLC in total defense. The Bearkat secondary intercepted 13 passes during the 2001 championship season and was credited with 35 pass break-ups.

Free safety Keith Davis earned both NCAA I-AA All-America and first team All-Southland Conference selection. Davis completed his career ranked fourth on the all-time Sam Houston tackles list with 339.

Clay Jennings came to Sam Houston State from Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, AR, where he was defensive back coach. He coordinated the punt return unit, recruiting for the Muleriders in Dallas/Fort Worth and Central Texas, the strength and conditioning programs not only for football but for eight other male and female varsity sports teams.

Previously, Jennings served as secondary coach/defensive special teams coordinator at Morningside College in Sioux City, IA, and was secondary coach/special teams coordinator at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. Jennings worked as a graduate assistant and student coach at North Texas, tutoring the defensive secondary. At Morningside, he coached three All-North Central Conference players and one All-American. He was responsible for recruiting Nebraska and Iowa. At Morehouse, he recruited South Carolina, North Carolina, and Atlanta, GA.

Jennings is a 1996 graduate of the University of North Texas in Denton, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology. He worked towards his Post Baccalaureate Teacher Certification at North Texas in 1997. He was a defensive lineman and special teams player for the Mean Green, earning four football letters. He played on North Texas’s 1994 Southland League championship team. He was an all-state and all-district district player for LaVega High School in Waco.

LAFAYETTE — Louisiana football coach Rickey Bustle has announced the hiring of Clay Jennings, formerly the secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Sam Houston State , as the Ragin’ Cajuns new secondary coach in charge of cornerbacks.

Jennings replaces Carey Bailey, who accepted the defensive line coaching position at Middle Tennessee last week, on Bustle’s nine-man staff for the upcoming 2003 season.

In other staff changes, Bustle announced that assistant head coach Gary Bartel, who will be in his fifth season and is now the senior member of the coaching staff, will move from coaching defensive backs to working with the free safeties and outside linebackers.

Second-year staff member Shawn Quinn, who coached the outside linebackers last season, will take over Bailey’s duties as the defensive line coach.

Jennings played defensive line and special teams for the University of North Texas from 1992-95 and was a member of the Mean Green’s first Division I-A squad in 1995 and the Southland Conference championship squad in 1994.

He had spent the past two seasons at SHSU in the capacity of secondary coach and recruiting coordinator.

Wow, Sioux City, Ia is right near where I live. Both my parents and one of my siblings went to Morningside. They usually have a pretty solid football team. Hopefully he'll be an excellent addition to the coaching staff.

I was out and about at Cajun Basin today and had the privilege of meeting coach Jennings.

He is very nice and I am sure will be a huge part of Louisiana's future success.

Houston has not officially announced Jennings' hiring, but sources in both schools' athletic departments confirmed his hiring by the Cougars Saturday. Terms were not announced, but Jennings will reportedly earn over $20,000 more in salary as part of head coach Art Briles' UH staff.

The 31-year-old Jennings, who recruited the Houston area for the Ragin' Cajuns, coached defensive backs at UL the last two seasons. The Cajuns led the Sun Belt Conference in pass defense during the 2004 season, allowing opponents 174.5 yards per game and finishing over 20 yards ahead of the second-place team (New Mexico State, 197.4). UL was also second in the league in total defense.

&nbsp; TCU football has announced the hiring of Clay Jennings as cornerbacks coach.

Jennings, who has coached five current NFL defensive backs, comes to the Horned Frogs after serving as the cornerbacks coach at Baylor last season. He replaces Charles McMillian on the TCU staff. McMillian left to become a defensive backs coach at Texas A&M.

Prior to serving the 2007 campaign at Baylor, Jennings worked two seasons (2005-06) as safeties coach at Houston. He helped the Cougars to back-to-back bowl appearances and the 2006 Conference USA championship. In 2006, Cougars' free safety Will Gulley earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honors while Brandon Brinkley was named to the league's all-freshman squad.

Prior to his two-year stint at Houston, Jennings spent two seasons (2003-04) as the defensive backs coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, where he helped the Ragin' Cajuns to a No. 11 national ranking in pass defense. At Louisiana-Lafayette, Jennings tutored current NFL players Antwain Spann (New England Patriots), C.C. Brown (Houston Texans) and Michael Adams (Arizona Cardinals).

Jennings also worked two years (2001-02) as secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Sam Houston State. A four-year letterwinner (1992-95) as a defensive lineman and special teams standout at North Texas, Jennings was a member of the Mean Green's 1994 Southland Conference championship team and the school's first NCAA Division I-A squad in 1995. He began his coaching career as a student assistant (1996) and then graduate assistant (1997) at North Texas before moving on to Morehouse.

A 1992 graduate of Waco's La Vega High School and a 1996 North Texas alumnus (bachelor's of science in kinesiology), Jennings and his wife, Belinda, have two children: son Kirby and daughter Kenzie.
