Only days after suffering its first loss of the season – an 83-73 decision at Sam Houston – the UL Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball program will look to get back to their winning ways at 7 p.m. today when they play host to the Lamar Cardinals in the Cajundome.
Head coach Garry Brodhead is hoping to see improvement on the defensive side of the floor from his Cajuns (2-1) against the Cardinals.
"I didn't think we defended as well as we're capable of against Sam Houston," Brodhead said. "We scored 73 points against Sam Houston and I feel that anytime we score 73 points we should win the game."
Among the reasons for the Cajuns' defensive struggles is the absence of sophomore guard Kia Wilridge, who remains sidelined with a shoulder injury.
"Being without Kia has definitely made a difference for us defensively," Brodhead said. "She is so good defensively that she is able to overcompensate for others. We don't have another Kia on the floor defensively, but this is an opportunity for us to get better as a team."
The Cajuns are likely to be challenged again by Lamar (2-2), a team that has shown an ability to shoot the three and pressure the basketball defensively. The Cardinals have made 36-of-91 (.395) from behind the 3-point line.
"Lamar is a very athletic basketball team," Brodhead said. "They are a team that gets up and down the floor. They love to pressure the basketball and they can shoot the three."
Among the players the Cajuns must defend is Lamar's Shauna Long. The junior guard, who is averaging 14.5 points per game, is off to a hot start to the season having made 15-of-23 from the 3-point line (.652).
"They've made 36 3-pointers as a team this year and (Long) has made almost half of them," Brodhead said. "They have a couple of kids with at least six 3-pointers, so we have to make sure we do what we do best and that's defend and rebound."
