Offensive linemen are a key in any recruiting group, and UL's football team has added one to its fold with its first commitment to the 2008 class.
Joe Duhon, a 6-foot-3, 290-pounder who has played all three offensive line positions for Washington-Marion High in Lake Charles, issued a verbal pledge to Ragin' Cajun coach Rickey Bustle Wednesday night.
"He's a dominant-type lineman," said Washington-Marion coach John Jenkins. "Last week against Wossman, we just kept running the ball behind him wherever he was."
Duhon, a three-time All-District 4-4A selection, earned coaches' Class 4A All-State honors last year even though the Charging Indians finished 4-6. He helped lead W-M to a hurricane-abbreviated 4-2 season and a district title as a sophomore in 2005, and the Indians are currently 3-0 this season.
Duhon is currently playing center after seeing time at tackle and guard in his first two seasons, and he's getting some personal tutoring in the position from former Cajun center Ronnie Harvey. A three-year UL letterman from 2002-04, Harvey is in his third year as an assistant coach at Washington-Marion.

"This is his first year at center," Jenkins said, "and Ronnie's teaching him all the tricks of the trade. He's a smart player and he's really picking it up in a hurry."
Jenkins said that Duhon, academically qualified with a 3.3 GPA, a 17 ACT and with nothing lower than a "C" on his transcript, is the first four-year starter in his Indian tenure. He said he'll also be among the first players to come out of his senior year eligible to play on the Division I-A level immediately.
"He cares about his academic performance," Jenkins said. "I tell all our kids that if you're interested in playing somewhere, academics come first. We want him to be a positive addition to someone's program, and he will at UL."
Duhon was offered by Colorado, McNeese and Southern and also drew attention from LSU, Rutgers and Mississippi State.
