Keeping up with the growing arms race in coaching compensation is enough to drive anybody insane. We began tracking coaches compensation years ago, only to become discouraged at the lack of information available to the public. So, we resorted to tracking the numbers by following various news reports of the subject across the nation. When in doubt, we often went with the more conservative number. However, many contractual terms graduate along the length of the agreement. Case in pint is Arizona State's Dennis Erickson, who signed a $5.6 million contract to be paid over five years, although his base for 2007 is $500,000, we are reporting him at his average of $1.12M.
Most sources had Notre Dame's Charlie Weis signing a 10-year contract worth between $30-40 million, but many claimed it to be in the upper 30's. Almost all compensation plans are tiered, and we're concerned with the current compensation earned. So we decided to go with a reported $3.3 million figure.
It is especially difficult in getting the compensation details from private institutions. Temple's Al Golden let his slip before his hush clause went into effect, which is why his numbers have been reported. However, it is like prying a nickel from a Scotsman to find out the compensation packages for many of these institutions.
